The temporomandibular joints (TMJs) connect your jaw to the skull. When they hurt, click, or limit opening, your clinician may request dedicated imaging.
A TMJ CBCT is a 3D X-ray of the joint bones and surrounding structures. It does not replace a clinical exam, and it is not MRI (which is better for discs and soft tissue). It is a targeted bone study when your dentist or specialist needs that view.
What TMJ CBCT Can Show
- Joint space and bony contours of the condyle and fossa
- How the joints relate to the bite (occlusion) in the prescribed views
- Degenerative or remodeling changes in bone
- Information that supports surgical or orthodontic planning when indicated

TMJ CBCT vs a Regular Panoramic X-Ray
A panoramic X-ray includes a rough view of the joints at the edges of a wide 2D image. It is useful for screening but is not a dedicated TMJ study.
TMJ CBCT is prescribed when 3D bone detail of the joints is needed. Like other CBCT exams here, it requires a referral.

What to Expect at the Visit
- The scan itself takes seconds once you are positioned
- You remain still while the unit rotates
- Files are typically sent digitally the same day
Bring your referral. If your clinician also requested bite, airway, or additional views, those should be listed on the form so we capture the correct protocol.
Cost
TMJ imaging is a type of CBCT protocol. Fees depend on what is prescribed (for example, whether it is combined with a larger volume). We confirm the study from the referral before imaging and list self-pay options on our pricing page.
